No one ever said, “Marriage is a piece of cake.” Let’s face it: as much as we love a good love story, happy marriages take effort. Here’s what to avoid.

A happy marriage takes a lot of work, but it’s worth it. Ask happy couples why they think their relationship is working, and they’ll all list different reasons, as if they’re actually talking to each other and hearing what their partners are saying. But according to relationship coach and author Javal Bhatt, there are a few common mistakes you can avoid if you don’t want to be unhappy in your marriage or have minor marital problems.

In a recent Instagram post, he listed 10 marriage mistakes to avoid:

“Never Be Too Possessive”

1. Never marry beyond your age, society or parental pressure, because then most people live unhappy lives, divorce or have extramarital affairs.

2. Never hand over the remote control and involve your parents, sisters, brothers and friends in controlling your marriage.

3. Giving yourself space and freedom is great, but don’t let it become so much that your partner wonders if you really love him. Balance.

4. Never be just partners. Be great friends to comfort each other, fearlessly share everything.

5. Never be overly possessive. It makes the partner feel caged.

“Never bring up the past”

6. Never take your partner for granted just because you are married. A long and happy relationship requires constant effort and quality time.

7. Never blame each other. Have open and honest communication without accusations.

8. Never start hiding things from each other. This leads to dishonesty and eventually cheating.

9. Never bring up the past, even in small quarrels or arguments. The past is the past; burn if you really want to be happy together.

10. Never disrespect each other’s parents and family.
