One of the most famous legends of Panchmukhi Hanuman Rupa is about the time when AhiRavan, Ravana’s brother, kidnapped Lord Ram and Lakshmana and was going to kill them. Ahiravan was the king of the underworld and a great magician. And so, using his magical powers, Ahiravan kidnapped them and took them to Patalok, intending to sacrifice them. When Lord Hanuman came to know about this, he rushed to save Lord Ram and Lakshmana and saw that both of them had become unconscious due to the magic of Ahiravan. And to defeat Ahiravan, Lord Hanuman had to immediately extinguish the 5 lamps that contained Ahiravan’s life force. Thus, Lord Hanuman assumed the avatar of Panchmukhi and blew out all the 5 lamps simultaneously thereby defeating Ahiravan.
