HTLS 2024: Oncology surgeon Dr. Ash K. Tewari details how diabetes and poor diet can contribute to cancer

Dr. Ash K. Tewari, a cancer surgeon, talked about how lifestyle choices can affect cancer and help control it.

On the final day of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2024, cancer surgeon Dr. Ash K. Tewari spoke about the importance of diet and metabolism in the fight against cancer. In a session on Cancer Control in India, Dr. Tewari spoke about the rising incidence of prostate cancer in India, the impact of environmental pollution on the disease and ways to combat it.

Dr. Ash K. Tewari, Professor, Head, System of Urology, ICAHN School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Director, Center of Excellence for Prostate Cancer, spoke with Sanchita Sharma, Senior Liaison Officer, WHO India, at HTLS 2024, where he spoke on the prevalence of a river in India. “Each year, 18 million people are diagnosed with cancer. One in five people know someone with cancer. Every year, we lose 9 million people to this disease,” he said.

Sanchita Sharma asked Dr Tewari about the impact of pollution and smoking on pollution and how India is tackling it. “There are things that we have done to alleviate cancer. One of them is something that every Indian knows about – smoking. This is one of the main reasons why cancer can occur in the lungs and many other parts of the body, including the prostate,” he replied. Dr. Tewari.

However, he added that there are many other things that Indians take lightly. “There are a lot of other things that we don’t pay attention to that could play a big role in reducing cancer. It’s our metabolic habits, our diet, our fight against obesity and diabetes,” he added, saying, “A diabetic or metabolic body is slightly inflamed and everything goes to extremes in such a body.”

Dr Tewari also spoke about the rising incidence of prostate cancer in India. “The good news is that it’s 95% curable if we catch it early. This ‘in time’ is a debate in India. In the US, 90% are curable, in India it’s 50-50,” he added.
