Gastritis can cause chronic stomach pain and make it difficult to get through the day. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Rohan Badave, Consultant Medical Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospital, Goa, pointed out the common causes that can cause gastritis and shared prevention tips to follow.
Common gastritis triggers:
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection: A common bacterial infection is one of the most common causes of gastritis. This can cause the bacteria to eat away at the lining of the stomach, making it easier for stomach acid to damage it.
Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen can irritate the stomach lining and cause gastritis if taken frequently or over time. Read also | Holiday binge? Fight indigestion and bloating with these powerful herbs and spices
Excessive alcohol consumption: Too much alcohol can irritate and wear down the lining of the stomach, making gastritis more likely.
stress: Emotional or physical stress can also play a role in the development of gastritis. Under conditions of severe psychological stress as a result of an injury or surgery, a patient may develop stress-induced gastritis.
Spicy or sour food: Although they cannot actually cause gastritis, spicy or acidic foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes can worsen symptoms by irritating the inflamed lining of the stomach.
Caffeine and smokingComment : Caffeine, as well as the fact that it irritates the stomach lining, produces more acid.

Tips for preventing gastritis:
Limit your alcohol consumption: Alcohol can make symptoms worse, so reducing your intake may help.
Quit smokingComment : Smoking increases the production of stomach acid and can worsen gastritis.
Have a healthy dietcomment : It is recommended to avoid irritants and choose a mild, non-irritating diet. Focus on foods like cooked vegetables, non-citrus fruits (bananas, apples), whole grains, and lean proteins.
