In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sharefa Chauze, dermatologist and esthetician at Sharefa Skin Care Clinic, explained, “Essentially, acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with sebum, skin cells and bacteria. This clogging results in various forms of acne, ranging from whiteheads to cystic lesions, which can affect not only your appearance but also your emotional well-being. Acne can cause embarrassment, frustration and stress as a person can become self-conscious about their appearance.’

According to research, the gut-skin axis plays a significant role in the formation of acne. Dr. Sharefa Chavez elaborated: “An imbalance of the gut microbiota can increase the inflammatory reactions of the skin, causing unpleasant acne. Moreover, stress is another contributing factor, as higher cortisol levels can increase oil production and worsen existing flare-ups. However, it is believed that the presence of acne slows down the aging process.’

Can acne really get rid of wrinkles? What science says:

Research shows that people with acne-prone skin may experience slower aging processes, especially when it comes to the formation of wrinkles. Dr. Sharefa Chauz revealed: “This phenomenon occurs due to the increased production of oil associated with acne; the sebum really hydrates and plumps the skin, acting almost like a natural moisturizer that relieves dryness over time. However, there is no confirmed evidence in this regard. It is better to consult a dermatologist and clear all your doubts about this statement. This claim has not yet been confirmed by experts and is not fully understood.”

The skin expert concluded: “It’s best to follow dermatologist-approved anti-ageing tips such as using chemical-free products, choosing a sunscreen with SPF 30, avoiding smoking and alcohol, eating a well-balanced diet and cutting down on fatty, sweet and processed products. Exercising daily for at least 30 minutes, managing stress through yoga and meditation, and getting a good night’s sleep can help a person have glowing skin. So, it is better to fight acne and also follow these tips to keep your skin glowing and healthy.”
