Researchers wanted to check the overall assumption in mating studies: that men are usually attracted to young women and women prefer elderly men. They found that men usually prefer partners who are slightly younger than them. Contrary to some common assumptions, the study showed that women also advised partners who are slightly younger than them, although the advantage was not as expressed as male.

More about the study

Researchers have analyzed the data of 6262 participants who signed up for Tawkify, the American matchmaking service designed to help people find long -term partners. Participants were mostly middle -aged and belonged to different races, income and history. After each blind date, both people appreciated how much they liked the date, how romantically attract to their partner and whether they want to go for a second date.

Interestingly, the participants earlier noted the preferred maximum age for the partner. However, the matchmakers sometimes combined them with people older than the stated limit when other features seemed good. The reported data showed a small but consistent trend: both men and women were a little more romantically involved in young partners. Within three different measures – romantic attraction, general impression and willingness to go on a second date – the youth was associated with higher ratings.
