Be aware of the consequences of heavy drinking
Leading author of the study, Gabriel Lopez, and her colleagues are aimed at exploring how alcohol and simultaneous use of alcohol and cannabis-related romantic and sexual experience of young people. They added that heavy drinking causes significant health risks, including increasing the risk of accidents, injuries and interaction in risky behavior.
Moreover, the researchers wanted to study whether the number of beverages consumed either with alcohol and cannabis predicts the likelihood of experience either a positive romantic or sexual event that day. They also looked at if these gender or sexual attacks changed.
Despite these risks, it is estimated that about one fourth young adult in the US is engaged in strong drinking for a month. Among this group, about every fourth woman reported that she consumed eight or more alcoholic beverages once, and every fourth man reported that he drinks ten or more drinks. Many young people engaged in high intensity also report cannabis at the same time.
What the study found
The results showed that in the days when the participants consumed more than usual, they were more likely to report on the spared, and positive romantic or sexual experience. This association is conducted for both men and women, and regardless of sexual abuse history.
The study revealed interesting gender differences due to the simultaneous use of alcohol and cannabis and romantic/sexual experiences: in men there is no significant connection with the spared experience, while women had a decrease in the likelihood of regret, even after controlling alcohol consumption. This suggests that cannabis may have a softening effect on the negative effects of alcohol in women but not men.
