If you’ve asked yourself, “What are we?” you may be in a situation. Here’s how it’s different from a relationship, according to a relationship coach.

We’ve all heard of situations. You know, the type of casual or sexual relationship that exists between “friends with benefits” and “in a relationship.” Essentially, it’s a relationship that isn’t even official: no violent social media launches, no storing each other’s toothbrushes, and no meeting the parents. In a recent Instagram post, relationship coach and author Jawal Bhatt highlighted the difference between a relationship and a situation.

While you might think that the rise in the number of situations could be attributed to the endless number of options available on dating apps – why commit to monogamy with one person when you can be just a stone’s throw away from a more perfect partner? – Javal talked about how intentions and responses differ in “relationship versus situation”. He shared four cases:

Sample #1

Relationship: My intention is clear, I want to date to get married.

◉ Situation: let’s see, let’s go with the flow.

Sample #2

◉ Attitudes: I don’t accept contradictions, breadcrumbs, hot and cold behavior or mixed signals. I speak clearly and leave when necessary.

◉ Situation: I’m fine with breadcrumbs and mixed signals; just don’t leave me.

Sample #3

◉ Attitude: I don’t fake it to impress someone. I want someone to accept the real me and I’m looking for connection, not time.

◉ Situation: I just want someone because I feel too lonely. So I’m okay with pretending and changing myself just because I want them to like me and accept me.

Sample #4

◉ Relationships: I can let it go when someone doesn’t need me and doesn’t reciprocate, but ignores and ghosts me. I know I want to communicate. So why fear, hold or force?

◉ Situation: I want to hold on because I might never find love again. I have invested so much time and effort into this man.
