Nutritionist Twincy Ann Sunil explains how protein plays a vital role in muscle growth and overall health, and explains its role in fat reduction.
If you try to lose fat, gain muscle and become a healthier version of yourself, it is often recommended to increase protein intake. But why does the protein play such an important role in muscle growth and fat loss? Talking to HT Lifestyle, Twincy Ann Sunil, (Nutritionist and Nutritionist) Bachelor of Clinical Nutrition and Diet, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, explained the science behind it.

As protein intake helps in muscle growth and fat loss
According to nutritionists, protein intake increases muscle protein synthesis (MPS), during which your body recovers and develops muscle fibers. “It is very important for muscle recovery and development,” she emphasized.
“Protein also provides your body with the necessary amount of amino acids that can be found in animal sources such as dairy products, eggs and meat. In addition, amino acids include leucine, which is a stimulator of deputies that are crucial in muscle recovery,” the nutritionist added.

Here’s how protein diets help:
- Diet proteins ensure that your body has all the necessary resources to help in the recovery process, reduce muscle tenderness and allow you to train regularly.
- Protein helps in increasing metabolism, and it has the highest Tef (thermal effect of food), which is the amount of calories that are burned during the digestive process.
- According to a nutritionist, Tef helps to increase metabolism, leading to faster calorie burning than carbohydrates and fats.
- Increasing protein consumption also helps in suppressing Greek (hunger hormone), and in turn helps to feel satisfied. So there is no desire to eat before, and it also helps to reduce the habit of overeating.
The role of consuming protein
Having explained the role of protein consumption, Twincy emphasized that it is necessary in the construction of the body, reduction of fat and improve bone health. In addition, it also plays an important role in supporting your cells, tissues and organs. “In the event that a person is interested in building his body, the protein should consist of a larger percentage of his diet plan,” she added.
