A recent study by researchers at Mit Media Lab has caused concern about the influence of chat on cognitive activity and teaching young people. It was conducted for several months, 54 participants between the ages of 18 and 39 participated in the study from the Boston district. Everyone was asked to write SAT style essays using either Chatgpt, Google search, or a digital tool.
The conclusions were strange. EEG scanning tracking brain activity in 32 regions showed that participants who use Chatgpt have demonstrated the lowest level of brain interaction. According to the researchers, these users “consistently do not work at nervous, language and behavioral levels.” Over time, the Chatgpt group grew all passive, often resorting to the copying methods.

Leading researcher Natalia Kasmin explained why she decided to publish the conclusions before the expert review. “What really motivated me is to bring it out now before waiting for a full expert review, this is what I’m afraid after 6-8 months will be some policy that decides:” Let’s make a GPT kindergarten. “I think it would be absolutely bad and harmful,” she said. “Developing brains are at high risk.”
Participants of the group “Brain only”, those who wrote an essay without help show the greatest nervous connection, especially in the groups of alpha, theta and delta associated with creativity, memory and semantic treatment. This group also expressed great curiosity, ownership and satisfaction of their work.
Those who use Google’s search also showed high interaction and satisfaction. According to researchers, this difference is characteristic, as more users are now turning to AI Chatbots instead of traditional search engines to find information.
The smallest interaction with the brain among Chatgpt users
Upon completion of the essay, the participants were asked to revise one of their former drafts. Those who in Chatgpt Group are now writing without a tool, they struggled their previous work and showed a lower brain wave activity. “The task was accomplished and you can say that it was effective and convenient,” Cosmin said. “But, as we show in the newspaper, you mostly have not integrated it into your memory networks.”
Unlike this, the group, intended for the brain only, when accessing the chat for rewriting, demonstrated an increased connection to the brain, believing that AI can increase training when used after active, independent thinking.
Although the study has not yet been considered and provided by a relatively small pattern, it adds an increasing study on MIT, studying the broader influence of the generative II. Previous studies from the laboratory have also linked the expanded use of II with increased sense of loneliness.
