Many people take the medicine without realizing that some may have a hidden effect on heart health. “As a cardiologist, I see some commonly used medicines can silently damage your heart,” Dzmitry wrote in his signature. Here are five, which should be monitored:
1. NSAID (eg ibuprofen, naproxen)
These conventional painkillers may seem harmless, but regular use can increase blood pressure, cause fluid retention, and in some cases even lead to heart failure, especially with prolonged use or those who have previous conditions.
2. Some chemotherapy drugs (eg doxarubicin, trstuzumab)
Although important for cancer treatment, some chemotherapy can weaken the heart muscle over time, increasing the risk of heart failure. Patients with treatment often require regular cardiac monitoring.
3. Stimulants (eg amphetamine, ADHD medicine)
These medicines used for treatment, such as ADHD, can increase the pulse and blood pressure, increasing the risk of arrhythmia and, in rare cases, heart attacks, especially in people with heart disease.
4. Diabetes drugs (eg Rosiglytone)
Some old diabetes medicines were associated with increased risk of heart failure. Many experts now recommend more new alternatives that offer better heart safety. Always consult your doctor before switching.
5. Immediate things (eg pseudoephedrine)
These drugs, common in the treatment of cold and influenza, can cause blood pressure and can cause irregular heart rhythms, risking high blood pressure or heart disease.
