Dr. Olivier Joliet, head of the study, emphasized the importance of dietary changes to improve health. He said: “The urgency of dietary change to improve human health is clear. Our findings demonstrate that small, targeted substitutions offer a feasible and powerful strategy to achieve significant health and environmental benefits without requiring drastic dietary changes.”

Health risks associated with ultra-processed foods

Earlier this year, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) published worrying findings about ultra-processed foods (UPF). High consumption of these foods was associated with a 50% increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 48-53% increased risk of mental health problems such as anxiety.

In addition, there was a 12% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes. UPFs were also associated with a 21% increased risk of death from any cause, obesity, and a 40-66% increased risk of heart disease. Other health problems associated with these foods included sleep problems, depression, asthma, high cholesterol, and gastrointestinal problems. While UFP can be consumed in moderation, doctors still recommend eating healthier foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to improve long-term health.
