Manmohan Singh, one of India’s longest-serving prime ministers and the first Sikh to hold a position of influence, died on December 26, 2024. He was 92 years old. Former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh was admitted to the emergency department of AIIMS Hospital on Thursday evening. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death former Prime Minister of IndiaDr. Manmohan Singh, 92. He was being treated for age-related ailments and suddenly collapsed at home on December 26, 2024. At home, resuscitation measures were immediately started. He was brought to the Emergency Department of AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 9:51 p.m. Kimolad,” said the hospital’s official statement.
His wife remained Gursharan Kaur and three daughters, namely: Upinder Singh, Daman Singhand Amrit Singh and their families.

Manmohan Singh, born on 26 September 1932 in Ga, West Punjab (modern day Pakistan), was the son of Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur. During the India-Pakistan partition in 1947, Manmohan Singh and his family moved to independent India. The family first moved to Haldwani, India and a year later moved to Amritsar in Punjab, India. Manmohan Singh studied economics at the University of the Punjab and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the subject. He graduated in economics from Cambridge University in 1957, after which he returned to India and worked as a lecturer at Punjab University. In 1960, he entered Oxford University to obtain a doctorate in economics, after which he worked at the United Nations from 1966 to 1969. At the time he started his bureaucratic career, Shri Lalit Narayan Mishra hired Singh as an advisor in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India. This was the beginning of his brilliant career, and the rest, as they say, is history.
In 1958, Manmohan Singh married Gursharan Kaur, who became his lifelong partner. Just like Singh, his wife Gursharan Kaur was also quite a scholar as she was a professor of history and a writer.

Upinder Singh is Professor of History and Dean of the Faculty at Ashoka University and the author of six books. She is also the former Head of the Department of History, University of Delhi and has received several awards, including the first Infosys Award for Social Sciences. Some of her famous books are Ancient Delhi and History of Ancient and Early Medieval India.

Their second daughter, Daman Singh studied at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and Institute of Rural Management, Ananda, Gujarat (IRMA). She is also a writer and some of her books are The Last Frontier: The People, Forests in Mizoram, a novel titled Nine to Nine. She has also written a biography of her parents Manmohan Singh and Gursharan Kaur titled Strictly Personal. Daman Singh is married to Ashok Patnaik who is a 1983 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. In 2016, he served as the Director General of the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID).

Meanwhile, the youngest daughter of Manmohan Singh and Gursharan Kaur, Amrit Singhworks as a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s actions often spoke much louder than his words. The Independent called him “one of the world’s most respected leaders” and “a man of extraordinary dignity and grace”. Meanwhile, the late Khushwant Singh once even praised Singh as India’s best Prime Minister, according to Wikipedia.

Scientist, economist, official and former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh will forever be remembered for his work and integrity.
