“If you tie your hair too tightly on a regular basis, then you run the risk of breakage and hair loss,” said Amit Thakur. (Instagram/@amitthakur_hair)

On Tuesday, Amit shared a video on his Instagram profile showing the damage that tight ponytails can do to hair. “If you tie your hair too tightly on a regular basis, you risk breakage and hair loss. I’ll tell you why, because the pressure placed on the root when the hair is pulled out can damage the hair follicles, leading to hair loss,” he said in the video. “Are you tying your hair too tight? Maybe you’re doing more damage than you think,” the hairdresser captioned his video.

Tight tails can lead to traction alopecia:

Hair loss isn’t the only damage that tight ponytails can cause. It can also lead to a more serious condition known as traction alopecia. Traction alopecia occurs when hair is regularly pulled tightly into a ponytail, braid or cornrows. Early signs of traction alopecia include a visible hairline, especially around the forehead, temples, or back of the head. In more severe cases, traction alopecia can lead to scalp ulcers and areas of scarred skin. Read also | Nita Ambani, Alia Bhatt’s hairstylist, reveals whether a haircut can “magically” fix damage. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t do ponytails or braids at all. “Instead, you tie a ponytail, just make sure the hairline is a bit loose, and to keep it looking sleek and tight, you use products like hairspray and cream,” said Amit Thakur.

“It’s important to let your hair down,” said the barber. “Sometimes it’s okay to have a tight hairstyle, but just like your skin, you need to let your hair breathe,” said Amit Thakur.
