According to research, elderberries can help regulate blood sugar levels in the body, promote healthy fat burning, and improve gut health with healthy gut bacteria. Elderberries have long been associated with traditional medicinal practices, but research suggests that drinking elderberry juice for just a week can provide promising results.

Participants were asked to drink elderberry juice for one week and then, after a three-week washout period, to avoid a carryover effect, they were asked to drink a placebo drink that tasted like elderberry juice but without the active compounds for one week. Patrick Solverson, associate professor of nutrition and exercise physiology at WSU, said in a statement, “The elderberry is an undervalued berry from a commercial and nutritional perspective. We are now beginning to recognize its value in human health, and the results are very exciting. Food is medicine, and science is catching up with this folk wisdom. This study adds to the growing body of evidence that elderberry, which has been used as a folk remedy for centuries, has many metabolic and prebiotic health benefits.”
