
ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) has achieved an important milestone in the space exploration: Gaganyan Mission, first in India human space flight program. To ensure success, ISRO is conducting an “analog mission” on Earth that will take place in Ladakh. What is an analog space mission?

Why was Ladakh chosen as the main location?

The Indian Space Research Organization chose Ladakh as the location for the analog mission for several reasons. The climate, environment and geography of Ladakh make it an ideal location for the mission as it closely resembles the conditions of a lunar or Martian environment. Ladakh was chosen because of its extreme conditions, high altitude, low oxygen levels and very cold conditions. Ladakh’s complex atmosphere allows scientists to test human psychology and astronauts’ ability to handle the environment. The experience of isolation in Ladakh is similar to that experienced in space, helping astronauts and scientists anticipate the effects of long-term isolation on a mission. The Government of India has invested in Ladakh to make it accessible for space missions by providing logistical support for smooth operations.
