History of Republic Day
Now let’s delve into the history of Republic Day. India gained independence on August 15, 1947, but did not have its own constitution until January 26, 1950. The constitution was drafted by the constituent assembly headed by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and replaced the Government of India Act. The committee submitted the final draft of the Constitution to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1948.
A few months later, on January 26, 1950. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who served as the first President of India from 1950 to 1962, celebrated with a 21-gun salute and the unfurling of the Indian national flag. After that, January 26 was recognized as India Day by the Republic.
Meaning of Republic Day
The significance of Republic Day is multifaceted. First, it emphasizes commitment to constitutional values: it reflects India’s commitment to the democratic ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
