On the Republic Day in 2025, find out why the national flag is “unfolding” on day P and “raise” on Independence Day, marking two different points in India’s history.
Republic Day 2025: The Day of the Republic has a cherished place in the hearts of the Indians, as it celebrates the day when the Constitution of India came into force in 1950. This year, on Sunday, January 26, India will celebrate its 76th day of the republic. This historical event means the transformation of India into a republic with a democratically elected government and a written constitution that enshrines the values of democracy, secularism and unity. The celebration of the Day of the Republic is marked by great tips, vivid state processions and cultural events. However, do you know that on this day the Indian flag is “unfolding” rather than “raising”? While the timing of “lifting the flag” and “flag deployment” are often used as interchangeable, in fact they are different ways of demonstrating the national flag. Let’s study the main differences in how the flag is presented on the Republic Day and Independence Day in India.
The difference between the location and deployment of the flag
The lift of the flag includes lifting it from the base of the tree to the top, allowing it to wave freely in the wind. On the contrary, the deployment means the deployment of the flag that is already attached to the rope at the top of the tree. The key difference lies in the starting position of the flag during the ceremony – the rise begins with the fact that the flag is below, and the deployment begins with it in place ready for the demonstration.
Why on the day of the republic unfold the flag

On January 26, during the celebration of the Day of the Republic, the President of India deployed the national flag on the Map of PET (formerly Rajpat). This act of “deployment” matters because by 1950 India had already gained independence and moved from colonial domination. The Day of the Republic is celebrated in memory of the adoption of the Constitution of India, which officially secured India as a sovereign, democratic republic.
How is it different from Independence Day

On Independence Day, which is celebrated on August 15, the Prime Minister raises the National Flag in the Red Fort in New Delhi. Unlike the deployment, the lifting of the flag provides for the lifting of the flag from the bottom of the tree, which symbolizes the formation of India as a free nation after receiving independence from British domination in 1947. This ceremony is accompanied by an honorable guard and execution of the state anthem.
