The term “geek match” has emerged among Gen Z as a fun way to express dating and friendship compatibility by focusing on shared interests and experiences.

Dating trends are evolving fast, especially among Gen Z. With terms like breadcrumbs, gaslighting, and ghosting becoming commonplace, the list of modern dating lingo continues to grow. Born between 1995 and 2012, this generation loves renaming concepts that existed long before their time. Deadline? Instead of just saying they want someone who shares their likes and interests, they now call it “freak matching.” (Also read: What is Throneing? The dating trend everyone is talking about )

What is a freak match?

“Weekly matching” is the latest buzzword in dating, recently named a “global hot topic” by a dating site Lots of fish. If you’re dating these days, you might want to familiarize yourself with the phrase “match my weirdo.” So what does this mean?

Content creator Morgan Pate shared with El that when you say you want someone to “match your freak”, you’re looking for someone who will be with you day after day and enjoy what you love to do – together. And Gen Z isn’t just using it for romance; they also use it platonically.

How did the term come about?

The term “freak match” with its weird vibe actually comes from Tinashe’s suggestive song “Nasty,” which was released in April. Catchy line: “Anybody come to my weirdo?” has been making waves on social media ever since. Tinashe even posted a jokey video about how she’s struggling to find someone who can match her crush despite the success of the song.

But in everyday use, the phrase has a more salutary connotation than the song’s obvious implication. For example, Morgan Pate shared on TikTok that fitting in with her freak means enjoying the simple things like great coffee, working out, tanning, showering, and then kicking back with Sex and the City in cute pajamas.

In a world where dating can often seem complicated, a “freak match” seems like a simple, fun way to express your desire for compatibility and a shared experience.
