There is the touching story behind the title of Amol Palekar’s memoir, The Viewfinder. When Palekar decided to direct his first film, Hrishikesh Mukherjee gave him a director’s viewfinder, which he himself had received from Bimal Roy before shooting his first film. It became a valuable asset for Palekar, imbued with symbolism. “How many great technicians, starting with Bimal, must have used this priceless gift that I received from Hrisha da,” he writes. When the monitors replaced the viewfinder while shooting the film, he handed it over to Roy’s daughter, Rinka Bhattacharya.
