Flowing curves in pink intertwine the three figures so smoothly that the marble they are made of creates a sense of one soul. “This sculpture, titled Protected, reflects the deep connection between people that stems from my sense of the oneness of the universe,” says Narayan Lakshman, the artist who created the work. It is currently on display in Delhi at the ongoing exhibition The Forces of Imagination.

“This is my first sculpture,” informs the Chennai-based artist, who is exhibiting his debut work alongside some aces in the field of contemporary sculpture such as Vibhor Sogani and Neeraj Gupta. “In fact, I worked closely with Gupta to create this work,” shares Lakshman. But he did not allow his thoughts to be colored by his guide’s palette, as is evident in the treatment of the material—pink Makran marble quarried in Rajasthan—that stands out even at this nascent stage of Lakshman’s sculptural experiments.

It is interesting to note how this artist combines the philosophy of his paintings according to the 3D medium. Pointing to two canvases that are also part of this exhibition, Lakshman explains: “My paintings are inspired by Zen Buddhism… I started painting during the Covid lockdown and now it takes me anywhere from 45 minutes to 10 days to complete the canvas. But sculpture is a relatively new and complex medium. It took me four months to complete my first work in this medium, including its conceptualization and design. Now I intend to pursue this remedy tirelessly and obsessively.”
