Chhat Puja is approaching and with it comes a wave of warmth, traditions and prasad preparations! This festival holds a special place in every heart of Bihar and Jharkhand, bringing families together to pay homage to Surya Dev (Sun God) and Chhati Maya. The festival starts with the much awaited “Nahay Khay” which if you are aware is all about cleaning, preparing and making tekua! This year, Nahay Khay falls on November 5, marking a good start to the festival.
What is Nahai Hai?
The first day of Chhat Puja, known as ‘Nahai Hai’, literally translates to ‘bathing and eating’. It’s all about cleansing — both physical and mental. Devotees begin their day with a holy bath, usually taken in nearby rivers or ponds. For those who cannot get to the river, a home bath with full respect will do. After cleansing, it’s time to prepare the first of many delicacies and prasadam dishes made with extreme simplicity, love and a touch of celebration!
Time is of the essence
Devotees who follow Chhath Puja rituals are strict about observing the auspicious timings for bathing and eating Nahai Khai. Although the specific hours may vary, it is generally considered ideal to perform Nahai Khai rituals early in the morning, during sunrise. This bath is important as it symbolizes the beginning of purification before the three main fasting days of Chhat Puja. Early risers get extra points for devotion, and hey, a morning bath with a holiday spirit can be very refreshing! And this year, Nahai Hai countdown starts at 6:39 AM and ends at 5:41 PM.
Nahai Khai: Food, Prasad and the Magic of Tekua
After the cleansing bath, it is time to prepare the first course, and only sattvik (pure and vegetarian) is prepared. Collect garlic and onions from the table; instead, rice, dal, pumpkin and gourd (lauki) take center stage. This simplicity is devotion! Tekua, Chhata’s favorite prasadam, can be prepared today or in the following days. With its golden-brown texture and jade flavor, tekua creates a wholesome atmosphere that no other snack can match.
Why Nahay Khay feels so special
Nahai Hai is not just a ritual; it is a moment that brings families together as they begin this journey of devotion and gratitude. Whether you’re celebrating in the heart of Bihar or listening to music from your city apartment, Nahay Khay sets the mood for Chhath.
