Why is it called the Cold Moon?

Full moons are given several names throughout the year. December’s full moon is known as the Cold Moon, a name derived from an old farmer’s almanac. This is a more obvious name than a mysterious one, as the full moon in December caused cold temperatures. It is also referred to by other names such as the Long Night Moon, a term with Mohican origins as noted in the Farmer’s Almanac. This name emphasizes the fact that the December full moon falls on one of the longest nights of the year. It is also the last full moon before the December 21st winter solstice.
