From nuts to berries to tomatoes: Learn about foods that help fight cancer and support brain health


Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in recent times. The experience of diagnosis and treatment can harm the health and psyche of the patient. However, with the right nutrients, the right diet and lifestyle changes, we can fight cancer and maintain brain health for a healthier life. In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Praveen Gupta, CEO and Head of Neurology, Fortis Hospital, said, “Fruits and vegetables form a major part of the diet that supports the fight against cancer. They are high in cancer-fighting elements, and the more colorful they are, the higher the concentration of nutrients. Eat a variety of vegetables, especially dark green, red and orange ones.’

Dr. Praveen Gupta also mentioned five foods that can fight cancer:

Berries are rich in vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Their concentration of antioxidants can help slow cancer formation and prevent cognitive decline. They may also benefit cancer immunotherapy.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage contain essential nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese, which have anti-cancer and neuroprotective properties. They also contain sulforaphane, a plant chemical that has anti-cancer effects.

Several studies have linked tomato consumption to a reduced risk of many cancers, including prostate cancer. Lycopene in tomatoes also has a beneficial effect on brain function. Processed tomato products such as juice, sauce or paste have increased cancer-fighting potential.

Legumes such as beans, peas, peanuts, tamarind, alfalfa, clover and lentils are rich in fiber, which may reduce the risk of certain cancers.
