From urethritis to prostatitis: know the common urological conditions that men face


Common urological and fertility problems faced by men are categorized by age – under 50 or after 50. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Neelakandan, consultant urologist and andrologist at Prashant Multispeciality Hospital, Chennai, said, “For men under the age of 50, urinary tract infections such as prostate infections are a common urological problem. . It is also called prostatitis.”

Common urological problems faced by men under 50:

Common symptoms of prostatitis include a burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, and inability to control urination. Urethral discharge or urethritis is also common in men under the age of 50. Warning signs of urethritis include blood in the urine or semen, painful discharge, fever, and enlarged lymph nodes in the groin area.

Prostate enlargement:

“A common problem faced by men over 50 is an enlarged prostate gland. This is a benign age-related increase; rarely it can be a cancerous enlargement of the prostate. For these patients, common symptoms include an inability to completely empty the bladder. Urine is a thin stream and it may take a long time for the bladder to empty completely. Even after voiding, they feel that the bladder is not emptying completely,” said Dr Neelakandan.

Severe abdominal pain:

Men of all ages may experience a sudden onset of severe abdominal pain accompanied by back pain, vomiting or retching, a burning sensation when urinating, or sometimes bloody urine. Kidney stones are very common these days, said Dr. Neelakandan. Changes in a sedentary lifestyle, reduced water intake, and increased humidity with lots of sweat contribute to this common urological condition.

However, kidney stones can be solved. Dr. Neelakandan added, “Stones can be treated with medication—advanced laser and endoscopic surgical techniques will provide complete clearance.”
