Often referred to as the Mexico of India, Goa captures the hearts of travelers with its vibrant culture, gorgeous beaches and adventurous spirit. Both destinations share a laid-back atmosphere, rich history and a deep appreciation for good food and the holidays.

Is Goa the Mexico of India? Amazing parallels you need to know
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Ryan Prazeres, Co-Founder and CEO, Oneboard, shared, “Goa and Mexico boast beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters, ideal for swimming, sunbathing and water sports. Both destinations are known for their lively beach parties with music, dancing and a vibrant atmosphere.’
This magical destination has something for everyone, but to get the most out of your trip, it’s important to plan wisely and avoid common pitfalls. One of the striking similarities between Goa and Mexico is their colonial influence.
Ryan explained: “Goa was a Portuguese colony and Mexico was colonized by Spain. This shared colonial history has left a significant mark on both regions, as can be seen in their architecture, cuisine and cultural influence.” Visitors can explore charming colonial towns with colorful buildings and historic landmarks, immersing themselves in the unique mix of cultures that shape each area.
Both Goa and Mexico are known for their breathtaking adventure views. From water sports like surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving to exploring lush jungles and ancient ruins, the thrill-seeker will find plenty to explore. Ryan emphasized, “You can also explore the lush jungles, ancient ruins and picturesque landscapes of both Goa and Mexico.” Whether it’s parasailing over the Arabian Sea or trekking through picturesque landscapes, both destinations promise unforgettable experiences.
When it comes to nightlife, Goa rivals even the most popular party destinations in Mexico. Bright beach bars, nightclubs and live music venues fill the coast, creating an energetic atmosphere that keeps the party going until dawn. Festivals and celebrations held throughout the year give visitors the chance to experience the colorful traditions and local atmosphere that make every visit unique.

Varun Hegde, founder of Soul Traveling captures this essence well when he said, “The lifestyle in Goa is relaxed and the people are kind. It draws comparisons with Mexico. We have distilleries—tequila is big in Mexico, and we have feni, our local Indian spirit.”
Why Goa is the ultimate tropical vacation
When planning your itinerary, avoid common mistakes that can ruin your experience. Ryan cautioned against over-packing and said: “Goa is a tropical destination so pack light and comfortable clothing. Avoid packing unnecessary items that will only weigh you down.” He emphasized: “Also, don’t forget the sunscreen! The Goan sun can be intense and regular application of sunscreen is vital for a safe and enjoyable visit.”
Visiting during the monsoon season (June to September) is a challenge because the lush greenery is impressive, but heavy rainfall can disrupt plans. Ryan suggested being flexible and having a backup plan. “If you visit Goa during this time, you need to be prepared for heavy rainfall and possible disruption of activities. Also, Goa is small and you can get from one end to the other in less than four hours. But that doesn’t mean you have to plan activities far apart. Complete all of South Goa first, then move on to North Goa or vice versa.” This strategic approach will improve your experience and save you time.

One of the biggest pitfalls is trying to do too much. Goa isn’t just a destination, it’s an atmosphere, and rushing through activities can rob you of the experience. Varun urged travelers to plan ahead and look for authentic experiences beyond partying and drinking. “Transport should be planned before arriving in Goa. One must understand that since Ola and Uber are not available in Goa, your transportation needs to be thought of in advance.” He added: “Talk to someone local – looking at influential people can sometimes contribute to a narrow perspective. Explore lesser-known activities such as kayaking on the Chapora River or visiting a local bakery to see how traditional pao is made.”
In conclusion, Goa offers an exciting combination of adventure, culture and relaxation. By avoiding these common pitfalls and embracing the unique charm of this vibrant destination, your trip will be even more rewarding.
