Humans of Bombay founder and CEO Karishma Mehta said proceeds from the sale of her luxury leather goods will go to animal welfare NGOs.

Karishma Mehta, founder and CEO of Humans of Bombay, recently announced that she is selling off all of her luxury leather goods as she takes a cruelty-free approach to fashion this year.

Mehta said she has decided to stop buying leather of any kind and to sell all the leather products she owns, with the proceeds going to animal welfare NGOs.

On Wednesday, the Mumbai-based entrepreneur posted pictures of her luxury shoes and bags on Instagram. The photos showed her collection of bags and shoes by Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Yves Saint Lauren (YSL) and Fendi.

“As a vegetarian, I won’t eat meat because I don’t like eating a living thing. How then can it be good for me to participate in a market that prides itself on being ‘luxury’ by charging a premium for the quality of the animal it’s skinned from?’ she said in the message.

Take a look at her post:

Mehta, who founded Humans of Bombay (HOB) in 2014, has interviewed people from all walks of life for her wildly popular online storytelling platform, which has over 2.8 million followers on Instagram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Ratan Tata are among the personalities she has interviewed on her platform.

Last year, Mehta found herself at the center of controversy after Brandon Stanton, founder of Humans of New York (HONY), accused her of copying his format. His remarks came after HOB filed a copyright infringement case in the Delhi High Court against another online storytelling platform, People of India (POI).

HOB responded to Stanton in an open letter, saying his words were “cryptic attacks on our efforts to protect our intellectual property.”

In a separate post, Mehta said she never shied away from sharing the idea with her New York colleagues at her company. “…we were inspired by HONY and will always be grateful for showing us what storytelling can do for society,” she said.
