Shitija, who shares health and fitness tips and tricks on her Fit Chef Instagram account, recently indirectly criticized Ranveer Singh’s protein and supplement brand SuperYou. Though she did not name names, she cautioned people against blindly following what celebrities promote as health food, as a blurry image of Ranveer promoting SuperYou was superimposed on the product’s ingredients listed on the packaging.

“Don’t buy everything he sells”

In a post titled ‘Stop buying food without reading labels’, Shitija said: ‘So I’m going to share something really shocking but also something I always say. When you see a product that looks really good, the packaging is really great… I came across this one on Instagram. And what was more? He was promoted by a huge Bollywood celebrity who looks so good that you want to buy whatever he’s selling.’

“But you don’t buy everything he sells! Rather, you turn the product over and see the packaging. I am shocked by the ingredients that went into it. Every chemical you can think of is in this product,” she added, before introducing her followers to “some of these ingredients that she’s totally averse to.”

“Be Smart and Learn to Read Labels”

“Like edible vegetable fats that are hydrogenated. There are, of course, emulsifiers; there is also vegetable oil. It also says wheat flour, but it says maida in brackets. It has stabilizers, it has artificial flavors, it has artificial colors. I mean, they literally missed nothing. It really shocks me that we don’t do our due diligence. We just believe the celebrity and decide to put it in our bodies. Guys, be smart and learn to read labels. Just because it says it has X amount of protein, and just because it looks good and the person selling it looks good, don’t go and buy it,” she concluded.

“Don’t fall for the marketing hype”

According to Shitia, you should “think twice before you take a bite.” In her post, she also said: “Not all ‘healthy’ snacks are created equal. Those protein bars and trendy health food? They’re often filled with hidden ingredients that can wreak havoc on your body — even ones your favorite celebrities swear by. Your health is non-negotiable. Don’t fall for the marketing hype.” She says you should learn to: “Read food labels, understand ingredient lists and make informed dietary choices.”

More about the brand

It was recently reported that Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has acquired a 50 percent stake in protein food and nutritional supplement brand SuperYou for an undisclosed amount. The company was co-founded by Nikunj Biyani. Ranveer will be actively involved in the company’s operations as a co-founder with the aim of opening it up to a wider audience. The company said in a statement that the products will be made using fermented yeast protein technology, and an ad featuring the actor was promoted on his social media.

Back in 2022, food writer and researcher Swetha Sivakumar demystified diners. Was she talking about what they actually had? Which ones to choose? What exactly is in a protein bar? Click here to find out.
