History of Maha Kumbh Mela 2025

The origins of the Kumbh Mela go back to Hindu mythology, specifically the legend of Samudra Mantana or the churning of the ocean. According to ancient scriptures, this celestial event was a collaboration between the devas (gods) and the asuras (demons) to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality.

During this process, a kumbha (pot) filled with holy nectar appeared. To protect him from the demons, Lord Vishnu, disguised as Mahini, grabbed the pot and ran away. During his journey, a few drops of nectar spilled at four places: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, making them holy places for the Kumbh Mela. These four places became sacred as they took turns hosting the Kumbh Mela.
