Why is lip oil all the rage this winter?

In recent years, lip butter has gone from a niche product to a mainstream one. Its popularity is skyrocketing this winter thanks to its ability to combat one of the biggest beauty concerns of the season: dryness. Make-up artist Divya Arora says: “Unlike traditional lip glosses, which can often be sticky or drying, lip oils are enriched with nourishing ingredients like jojoba oil, almond oil or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients ensure that lips remain soft, supple and protected from harsh winter conditions.”

Advantages

Cold air and indoor heating can strip your lips of moisture, leading to cracking and peeling. Lip oils penetrate deep to replenish moisture levels, keeping lips healthy and hydrated.

Traditional glosses are notorious for their sticky texture. The lip oil provides a silky, lightweight finish that provides a naturally radiant shine without the sticky mess.

Many lip oils are packed with vitamins and antioxidants like vitamin E that not only nourish your lips, but also protect them from environmental damage.

The lip oil is incredibly versatile, whether worn alone for a subtle glow or layered over lipstick for added shine. They are equally good for casual days and glamorous evenings.

Lip oil vs lip balm

Both lip oils and lip balms are winter staples, but they serve slightly different purposes. Lip balms are an instant remedy for dryness and act as a protective barrier against the elements. They often come in thicker, wax-based formulas that retain moisture. On the other hand, lip oil not only moisturizes, but also adds a touch of glamor with its glossy finish.

Make-up artist Saheli Lehari explains: “Lip balms are great for prepping your lips, especially at night, but lip oils enhance your daytime look. They keep lips soft while adding a natural shine that makes for a beautiful photo.”

Trendy lip oils

Berry tones, soft mauve and sheer reds are the season’s shades that deliver the color you need while enhancing your natural lip tone. For those who prefer a minimal look, clear lip oils remain a timeless choice.

Best application tips

“To get the most out of your lip oil, gently exfoliate your lips before applying to ensure even coverage. Reapply throughout the day to maintain hydration and shine, especially in very cold weather,” says Lekhari.
