Social anxiety in children: Why are young children require greater support to handle

The study shows that children’s ability to cope with age is improving. Younger children need additional support, while the elders develop better attention and control.

Social anxiety is an extraordinary nervousness and fear in social situations, whether it is a conversation with people or just being near them. However, no anxiety remains the same throughout life; It changes with age. The study published in the journal of child psychology and psychiatry showed that children with social anxiety respond to their mistakes by age depending on age.

What did the study find?

The researchers inspected 214 children between the ages of 7 and 17. The children played a simple computer game that checked how well they focused after the mistake. The results were significant when young children up to 11 years of age fought markedly for reorientation after mistakes. But older children, 11 and above, had no problem.

If anyone has anxiety, they work on mistakes, panic and cannot focus. But it changes over time. From the conclusions it can be understood that when children grow, their ability to move from mistakes improves, even if they have social anxiety. It also suggests that children, as they age, have a much better cognitive control and can focus on their work.

This study also shows that younger children with social anxiety will need additional support from friends and peers when dealing with mistakes, as they do not yet develop skills to fight for their own mistakes.

The data obtained also resemble the importance of treating social anxiety in children depending on age.
