Fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes and mouth, are among the early signs of aging. Additionally, skin tone can become uneven with age, showing dark spots or hyperpigmentation due to sun damage and skin inflammation.

Although the early onset of aging cannot be prevented, proper care and use of the right skin care products can delay the signs of aging. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Rahul Pillai, Consultant Dermatologist and Medical Director of Kkris Skin Care Center and Laser Clinic in Chalakudy, Kerala, highlighted the main lifestyle habits that contribute to skin aging –

1. Sun exposure and skin aging

Being in the sun is one of the main causes of premature aging of the skin. UV rays damage the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, leading to wrinkles, age spots and sagging. It is important to apply a sunscreen that provides long-lasting protection every day and to wear protective clothing. These habits can protect your skin from UV damage and help delay the signs of premature aging.

2. Diet and skin health

A diet full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants is vital for healthy skin. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts, help fight free radicals that accelerate aging. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and flaxseed can also reduce inflammation and support skin elasticity. By including these nutritious foods in our diet, we can nourish the skin from the inside out.

3. Moisturizing for healthy skin

Staying hydrated is key to keeping your skin healthy and vibrant. Drinking enough water helps flush out toxins, improve circulation, and keep skin hydrated. When skin is dehydrated, it is more likely to show wrinkles, dullness and uneven texture. Moisturizing supports the natural functions of the skin and gives it a radiant appearance.

4. Exercise and skin aging

Regular exercise improves overall health and benefits the skin. Physical activity improves circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to skin cells, which helps produce collagen and maintain skin integrity. Exercise also reduces stress levels, which has a positive effect on skin health. Regular exercise can improve the appearance of the skin and maintain its integrity.

5. Stress management for skin health

Chronic stress can accelerate the aging process and cause skin problems such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. High levels of stress release cortisol, a hormone that breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to premature aging. Techniques such as meditation, yoga and deep breathing can reduce stress and its effects on the skin. Managing stress is essential to maintaining healthy skin.

6. Lack of sleep

During sleep, the body regenerates, including the skin. Lack of sleep can interfere with this process, leading to dull, tired skin along with pronounced dark circles. Eye creams with retinol and hyaluronic acid can help fight fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots, giving you a fresher look.

7. Smoking and skin aging

According to Cancer Research UK, more than 5,000 chemicals are released when a cigarette is burned. Most of them are harmful and carcinogenic, which also increases the likelihood of developing some forms of skin cancer. Regular smoking causes skin to lose its natural glow, skin tone to become uneven, and skin to age prematurely.

By choosing a healthy lifestyle and taking care of your skin, you can minimize the effects of aging. It’s never too late to start taking care of your skin. Let’s embrace aging gracefully by taking proactive steps to maintain a healthy and vibrant complexion.
