In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Tapas Kumar Kohli, HOD & Consultant – Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospitals, Dwarka, New Delhi, said, “This involves using home remedies or over-the-counter medicines to treat common health problems without consulting a doctor. Self-medication can lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment, potentially causing long-term harm.”

Why is self-medication so common?

Access to over-the-counter medicines and the desire to avoid medical expenses are the main reasons, said Dr. Tapas Kumar Kohli. “Many people feel confident managing minor symptoms by relying on social media, the Internet and personal experience. However, this trend is contributing to broader public health issues such as antibiotic resistance and increasing drug addiction,” he added. “Reading the literature and drug labels correctly, understanding potential side effects and following the correct dosage are essential. A pharmacist should be consulted when purchasing medicines as this prevents misuse, minimizes risk and ensures patient safety,” added Dr Tapas Kumar Kohli. How to stop the practice of self-medication?

Dr Tapas Kumar Kohli suggested: “To eliminate the risks of self-medication, health authorities and providers need to raise awareness of its potential dangers. People should be encouraged to seek the advice of qualified medical professionals for persistent or severe symptoms before self-medicating. Promoting a culture of informed decision-making with an emphasis on the value of medical advice can strike a balance between autonomy in self-care and overall safety.” It is equally important to take strict measures to limit the sale of over-the-counter drugs.
