Here’s how hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can affect a woman’s reproductive health.
Thyroid disorders are believed to be confused in women, which can significantly affect their reproductive health. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Archana Juja, Consultant Endocrinologist, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai said, “Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) is common in women. Effects of hypothyroidism on fertility and pregnancy:
“Uncontrolled hypothyroidism in the mother can lead to various problems for both the mother and the fetus. It increases the risk of miscarriage, threatening abortion and early pregnancy bleeding. High maternal TSH, especially in the first, can lead to impaired IQ, hearing difficulties and some birth defects in the baby that are completely preventable with a simple maternal thyroxine supplement For women who have hypothyroidism and conducting treatment, it is recommended to keep TSH before conception up to 3 and increase the dose by 25% as soon as they are positive for pregnancy, “explained Dr. Archana Juja. How hyperthyroidism can affect fertility and pregnancy:
“Hyperthyroidism (an overactive gland) is less common but also causes significant fertility problems in women. Women on hyperthyroid medication are advised to follow up closely with their endocrinologist to adjust their medication to the minimum safe dose before conception and during pregnancy.” – added the endocrinologist.
Prevention tips to follow:
“It is important to remember that women with thyroid disorders can conceive, have healthy pregnancies, and deliver healthy babies if thyroid levels are kept under control. Regardless of the mother’s thyroid status, a thyroid blood test is recommended for all newborns for early detection of congenital hypothyroidism, which is a preventable cause of mental retardation will become,” the doctor added.
