This one-man play will shed light on the prehistoric and modern differences between men and women

The battle of the sexes is an ancient story, and now a new play, Defense of the Caveman, is debuting in town. The longest-running solo play in Broadway history, actor Vishesh Arora will take to the stage on November 24th, as well as December 1st and 8th at the Veda Kunba Theatre. Written by playwright Rob Becker and first produced in June 1991, this comedy-drama has been performed in more than 40 countries and in 30 languages.

Ask director Heeba Shah why she chose a new actor to debut in such a prestigious play and she says, “A solo play is more difficult than an ensemble because one actor has to be able to hold the audience for the duration. We went through a rigorous audition process and selected Vishesh from over 30 people.” However, the final signing of the actor was made by executive producer Oscar Erickson, who “has been planning to bring this production to the Indian market for a long time” and is “excited to finally bring this show to India for the first time”.

The theater piece takes a light-hearted look at the misunderstandings between men and women through the eyes of a caveman. The story goes that after the man leaves the party, he is visited by a caveman who tells him stories about his own marriage, comparing how things were different today and in prehistoric times.

“We adapted the play to the Indian sensibility. It resonates with audiences because it is based on a universal experience. Whether you’re single, in a relationship or somewhere in between, you’ll be laughing and nodding along,” explains Jiten Bhagat, Associate Producer.

For the 27-year-old, wearing such a massive shoe is an “honor” and no small feat. Arora says, “I would be lying if I said there were no nerves; of course there is. But I tell myself that whatever happens on stage, good or bad, belongs to me. I keep reminding myself that I know the character, the script, and everything else will fall into place. I won’t let them down.”

While directing is what she usually does, for Shah, the play chose her. “Jeeten wanted a female director because he believed that a woman understands the nuances better. I was initially hesitant as I am not a trained director, but after reading the play I was convinced. It was funny. We have tweaked some western references and language for Indian audiences, the content of the play works across cultures and most of the script is original.”
