The internet has done it again! A popular staple in Mumbai, vada pav has been reimagined as a “reverse see pav”, went viral and left Foodies of Mumbai smoking this time.
The unusual snack was previewed in a photo taken by Mumbaikar, a man from Mumbai who posted online a picture of fried potato water stuffed into a hollowed-out brioche bun for INR 190. The gourmet version of street food has not been welcoming to the locals.
Social media users were quick to criticize the concept, calling it an inconsequential and overblown affair. Comments flooded the page, including one that read: “This is a joke that upends all progress in the culinary arts,” while another scathingly said: “We’re happy with the straight combination of vada and pav.”
Some have even argued that the humor has turned the debate “backwards”. Adding a bit of semantic play, one comment read, “A real reverse Vada Pau should be a PAV sandwiched between two hot Vadas,” while another comment quipped, “Isko kha ke ulti karni hoti hai kya?”
The high INR 190 has also been controversial. Dubbed the ‘poor man’s burger’, vada pav has been religiously revered in Mumbai for its ease of access and affordability. One user was outraged: “Why reinvent the wheel when the ordinary is still exciting?” Others said it was disgusting, not even appetizing enough, asking if it had anything to do with the original vada pav.
Fusion food has sparked heated debate, but one thing is clear: Mumbaikars aren’t ready to trade their humble Vada Pav for an expensive brioche experiment.
