What is A2 milk?

Suvarna Sawant, Chief Nutritionist and Hod, Clinical Nutrition and Diet at Nanavati Max Super Specialty in Mumbai, told HT Lifestyle about his protein composition. He said: “A2 milk contains only beta-casin A2, unlike ordinary milk that has both A1 and A2 options. It comes from certain cow breeds such as Gir and Sahiwal.”

Ravin Saluja, director of the Sterling Agro Industries Ltd, additionally added to the explanation of the milk source, clarifying: “Traditional cow’s milk contains two types of B-kazeine proteins, A1 and A2. Most modern breeds, like Holsteins, create a mixture of both.

The nutritionist added: “Some people may be easier to digest, but it is important to note that A2 milk is not lactose.

Ravin, based on market ideas, also emphasized that consumers with digestive sensitivity, fitness lovers and families who are aware of health, are increasingly preferring A2 milk for relatively better digestibility. He said: “Those who feel bloating or discomfort from ordinary milk can find A2 for digestion. Similarly, a clean A2 protein profile helps in restoring muscle without bowel disorder. Both small and older are also looking for natural, useful nutrition and blowing options.”

Market growth

Ravin shared that the growth of A2 Milk noticed the momentum, an increasing advantage among consumers, especially because of the prostate. He said: “In India, the market size increased to $ 416 million in 2024, with a predicted CAGR being 19.7%, which inspires the interest in premium-dairy products. A greater consumer shift, digestive food and clean labels is a key market driver.”

From the usual milk, the A2 taste milk is not very different, as the Ravin noted, “the taste is not disturbed. A2-sized taste is very similar to ordinary milk, because any thin differences flow more from the breed and supply than the type of protein.”
