Move over, gold diggers. Gen Z has coined a new term for dating someone to elevate their social status: “throne.” This term refers to finding a partner that raises a person’s social standing, essentially putting them on a pedestal because of their influence and influence.

What is a throne?

As relationship expert Siddharth S explains. Kumar: “Enthronement is dating someone who boosts your reputation and ego through association.” In this dynamic, the social position of the partner is valued above his personal qualities. It’s about prioritizing your partner’s social representation over your own self-worth.

While the concept isn’t new—dating apps often show users that they’re looking for partners “higher” than themselves—throne is a modern take on the classic gold approach. Social currency now carries the same weight as financial wealth. Socializing isn’t inherently wrong, but masquerading as romance can be misleading.

Why does Gen Z prefer influence over intimacy?

“The motivation behind the throne often stems from a desire for social validation, access to exclusive social circles, increased self-esteem and increased social media influence,” says Delhi-based relationship expert Kalpana Singh.

While the throne may offer temporary social advantages, it can have a detrimental effect on relationships. Singh shares, “Relationships based solely on social promotion lack a foundation of shared interests, commitment, and intimacy. “‘Enthronement’ favors influence over real connection.”

Long-term effects on relationships

Kumaar notes that he has encountered many cases of status-based dating, where people seek partners “more desirable than themselves.” He warns that enthronement, while it can provide temporary validation, often lacks the depth and mutual respect needed for lasting relationships.

The trend comes alongside other predictions for the dating scene in 2025, such as “bugging” (getting stuck with chatter) and “geek matching” (finding someone who shares your quirks), according to a NY Post report.
