Cold weather can cause frequent urination, hormonal changes and diuresis, especially in men over the age of 60.

Winter is coming, and as temperatures drop, men need to start taking care of their prostate health. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Raghavendra Kulkarni, Consultant Urologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Secunderabad, said, “The prostate gland is vulnerable to cold conditions, which can exacerbate existing urinary symptoms or trigger new symptoms. Just like our body’s natural response to a drop in ambient temperature, the prostate gland also reacts in a very similar way.’ Read also | From urethritis to prostatitis: know the common urological conditions that men face

Prostate enlargement and overactive bladder:

“Enlargement of the prostate gland causes compression of the urethra and thus can affect urination. Prostate enlargement is very common with age, especially after 60 years. An overactive bladder is an untimely activation of the bladder muscles that affects urination. The above 2 health conditions are independent of each other, however, they can exist simultaneously. About 75% of patients with benign prostatic enlargement are said to have an overactive bladder,” explained Dr. Raghavendra Kulkarni. Read also | Most men ignore these early signs of prostate cancer. How cold weather can cause prostate problems:

“Cold stress stimulates the nervous system, specifically the sympathetic nervous system, which causes the prostate and bladder muscles to contract. It is also interesting that in the cold season, the imperceptible loss of fluid in the body in the form of sweating is very minimal. In order to achieve fluid balance, the body tries to do this by producing a larger volume of urine, which leads to more frequent urination,” explained the urologist. The doctor further added that because of the cold weather, hormonal changes can occur in the body, which can further lead to diuresis. “In cold weather, people tend to stay indoors and drink hot drinks more often. Both caffeinated and decaffeinated beverages promote diuresis,” said Dr. Raghavendra Kulkarni.

The urologist added that men over 60 are more prone to this condition in winter. “Clearly, men over 60 are likely to have benign prostatic enlargement or overactive bladder, or both. One in two people is said to have symptoms. Cold weather only worsens the situation,” he added. Read also | Symptoms or signs men should be aware of when prostate cancer is getting worse
