To get the maximum health benefits, it is very important to choose the right food according to the body’s metabolism. The study was conducted using a mathematical model created by the researchers to help understand the metabolic responses of both women and men to different dietary choices.

It has been observed that while men depend on carbohydrate metabolism for their health, women are largely dependent on lipids – fatty acids. The study also found that differences in metabolism can lead to changes in metabolic response and disease risk. The senior researcher of the study, Anita T. Layton, Ph.D., chair of mathematical biology and medicine and professor of applied mathematics, computer science, pharmacy and biology at the University of Waterloo, told Medical News Today, “The existing knowledge seems to be a paradox: that women tend to store more body fat than men during the absorptive period, but show much greater fat oxidation during the postabsorptive period. Our model can provide individualized gender-specific dietary recommendations that optimize metabolic health and prevent complications such as postprandial hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia.
