Coffee affects the gut microbiome
The composition of the intestinal microbiome is affected by coffee. This is a community of bacteria and fungi that live in the intestines. The researchers, who are part of a larger group, examined stool and blood samples from approximately 77,000 people in the UK, the US and 211 other cohorts around the world. They were particularly interested in understanding how coffee consumption affects the gut microbiome, given the beverage’s universal appeal and daily consumption. People either drink coffee regularly or don’t drink it at all, which means a more pronounced difference in the gut microbiome for those who don’t have the same affinity for the beverage.
The researchers found a significant difference in the levels of a gut bacteria called Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus found in coffee drinkers. Regular coffee drinkers had eight times higher levels of bacteria than non-coffee drinkers. It has affected different populations around the world, showing that it is more universal than regional. A study found a correlation between coffee consumption and this particular gut bacteria.
